The actual prevalence of endometriosis in the general population is unknown due in part to:

a) the societal normalization of pain
 
b) stigma around menstrual issues 

c) lack of disease awareness among patients, healthcare providers, and the public.

d) societal factors, such as clinical gender bias and inequities in the treatment of pain based on gender, have been well documented and may contribute to the under-prioritization of endometriosis research funding.
